Ghazal
Akha Bhagat 17
This ghazal, "Akha Bhagat 17," critiques widespread ignorance and deceit, portraying a society comfortable in its darkness. It describes how people, likened to owls, resist any discussion of truth or enlightenment, preferring their accustomed ways. They question the wisdom of those who seek to illuminate, claiming their own thousands of years have passed in darkness.

Just like the tale of Sheikh Chilli, so grand, Akho, until recently, was in that land.
Just like the fantastical tales of Sheikh Chilli, Akho was similarly caught in such imaginings until recently.

સામે સામાં બેઠાં ઘૂડ;
Wherever one looks, there are only heaps and heaps,Opposite each other sit the owls;
Wherever one looks, there are piles of rubbish; owls sit facing each other.

તે આગળ લઇ ચાંચજ ધરે;

તમે આવા ડાહ્યા ક્યાંથી થયા;
A thousand years we passed in night,Whence did you gather such great light?
We have spent a thousand years in darkness. From where did you acquire such wisdom?

O Akha, such is the way of the great, know this: They cast aside a diamond, and pick up a stone.
O Akha, understand that such is the nature of the great (or foolish): they discard a valuable diamond and instead pick up an ordinary stone.

જેમ પારાધી પશુને ગ્રહે ;
Behind the green tree she remains concealed,Just as a hunter seizes an animal;
She remains hidden behind the green tree, just as a hunter catches an animal.
