કૈં ક્યારનો આમ જ મુગ્ધ બની આ મીના બજારે ઊભો છું,
લાગી છે કતારો નજરોની, નજરોની, કતારે ઊભો છું.

Each movement, each state, depends here, upon a sign,
By their signal alone I walked, by their signal alone I stand.

આ તારી ગલીથી ઊઠી જવું સાચે જ નથી મુશ્કિલ કિન્તુ,
તું સાંભળશે તો શું કહેશે! બસ એ જ વિચારે ઊભો છું.
To leave this lane of yours is truly not difficult, but what will you say when you hear? It's just that thought that keeps me standing.
For the poet, leaving the beloved's lane is not truly difficult, but the concern of what the beloved will say upon hearing this keeps the poet standing there. This thought alone prevents departure.

આ દરિયાદિલી દરિયાની, હવા આકંઠ પીવા કેરી ય મજા,
ચાલ્યા જ કરું છું તેમ છતાં લાગે છે, કિનારે ઊભો છું.

જકારો મળ્યો’તો જ્યાં સાંજે ત્યાં આવી, સવારે ઊભો છું.

જોયા છે ઘણાને મેં ‘ઘાયલ’ આ ટોચેથી ફેંકાઈ જતાં,
એકાદ ઘડી આ તો એમ જ આવીને મિનારે ઊભો છું.
I've seen many, 'Ghayal', hurled from this very peak, For but a moment, I've simply come to stand upon this minaret.
