With a hundred coy pretenses, scarce two paces from home she strode; what cared she if, in that fleeting breath, a restless lover's life was lost?
With countless coquettish pretenses, the beloved stepped just two paces outside the house; what does she care if, in the meantime, some restless lover breathes his last?

How could these be mere teardrops mingled with the heart's blood? Lodged deep within for ages, the barbed arrowheads of grief have now emerged.
These are not merely drops of tears mixed with the heart's blood; they are arrowheads of sorrow that had accumulated in the heart for a long time and have now emerged.

The burning sorrow of my heart consumed the page entire; each word that issued from the pen burst forth as sparks of fire.
My entire letter was burnt by the burning passion and pain described from my heart, as every single word that flowed from the pen turned out to be pure sparks of fire.

Pull out the arrowhead, O healer, freely as you please— / But as the arrow leaves my heart, life leaves this mortal frame.
O healer, you may gladly draw out the arrowhead, but know that the moment the arrow leaves my liver, my life too will depart from my body.

Were I to weep, lost in the thought of your ruby lips, each shred of heart that falls from my eyes would turn a priceless gem.
If we were to weep in contemplation of your ruby-red lips, then every piece of our bleeding heart that falls from our eyes would turn out to be a priceless jewel.
6
We fear no prison, friend, though hundred thousand dungeons round us ring; in frenzy, like the wailing cry of chains, we have taken wing.
O friend, we do not fear the prison even if there be a hundred thousand dungeons; in our frenzy, we have broken free just like the wailing cry of chains.

With a scar upon the heart, smoke on the lips, and tears upon the hem, like a candle at the break of dawn, I departed from your gathering.
With a wound on the heart, smoke on the lips, and tears on the hem, we departed from your gathering just like a candle extinguished at dawn.

Had time itself matched the darkness of your night-hued tresses, the midnight steed of my madness would have galloped further still.
If time or the world had been like your night-black tresses, the black steed of my madness would have sprinted even further ahead.

Those whose nature is born crooked, when do they ever turn straight? Tell me, how can the bend ever be unbent from a painted flower’s bough?
Crookedness that is inherent in someone's nature can never be straightened, just as the curve can never be removed from a flower's branch drawn in a painting.
10
One night, when I took count of the burning scars upon my heart, the stars of the eighth heaven were found to be far fewer.
One night, when I counted the scars upon my heart, the stars of the eighth heaven turned out to be far fewer in number.

For God's sake, O ascetic, lift not the veil of the Kaaba / Lest here too, that very same infidel idol should appear.
O ascetic, for God's sake do not lift the veil of the Kaaba, lest the very same infidel beloved turns out to be here as well.

This yearning lives within my heart: as long as life and breath remain, / O Zafar, may their cherished name fall from my lips with every breath.
It is my heart's desire that as long as breath remains within me, O Zafar, the beloved's name should continuously rise from my lips with every single breath.
