Ghazal
This ghazal poignantly contrasts the lover's mortal suffering and destitution with the beloved's radiant beauty and detachment. It portrays the restless torment, ceaseless lamentation, and ultimate sacrifice inherent in profound, unrequited love.

Here lies a bed of dust, a shroud around the neck; there, a mirror in the hand, robed in blooming petals.
Here, there is a bed of dust and a shroud around the neck, while there, a mirror is held in hand and a dress made of flowers is worn.

At the hands of love, we find no peace day or night; the day is spent in wails and sighs, the night in desperate cries.
We find no peace day or night at the hands of love; the day passes in weeping and lamenting, and the night in loud wailing.

Awaken from heedlessness, stay not oblivious, O heart; for in my sight, this worldly realm is nothing but exile.
O heart, wake up from neglect and do not remain careless, for in my eyes this worldly place is nothing but living in exile.
4
I can utter nothing with my tongue, yet look and behold: What a realm is this, where even drawing a breath is forbidden!
I cannot say anything with my tongue, but just observe what kind of a place this is where one cannot even draw a breath or utter a word.
5
Upon my lashes hang not merely fragments of my bleeding heart, O friends; strung on this thread, they gleam as beads of Yemeni carnelian.
O friends, it is not merely pieces of my heart hanging on my eyelashes; threaded onto this string of lashes, they are like a necklace of Yemeni carnelians.

Write yet another ghazal, Zafar, and turn the rhyme anew; for the river of your poetic muse is now surging in full swell.
Zafar, write another ghazal by changing the rhyme, for the river of your poetic disposition is now surging with waves.
