Ilm n awey wich shumar
Jandi umer, Nahi aytebar
Eko Alif terey darkar
Ilmoun bas kari oo yaar
— Bulleh Shah
Meaning
Knowledge that cannot be counted (or measured) is wasted time, and the life that is yours will never be attained. If you merely desire one letter of the alphabet, then dedicate yourself to knowledge, my friend.
Explanation
Bulleh Shah teaches us that true knowledge and the depths of life are beyond measurement. He suggests that time and wisdom cannot be contained within any defined boundary. Yet, for the seeker's journey, the Beloved (or the Divine) requires nothing more than a single, pure spark of devotion—a mere 'Alif.' This beautiful couplet reminds us that spiritual realization is not about accumulating degrees or years, but about the purity of the heart's intent.
