बे-ए'तिदालियों से सुबुक सब में हम हुए

बे-ए'तिदालियों से सुबुक सब में हम हुए
जितने ज़ियादा हो गए उतने ही कम हुए
Through our excesses, we became light in everyone's view, The more we multiplied, the less substantial we grew.
Through our excesses, we became insignificant in everyone's eyes. The more we increased, the less substantial we became.

पिन्हाँ था दाम सख़्त क़रीब आशियान के
उड़ने न पाए थे कि गिरफ़्तार हम हुए
A hidden snare lay close beside the nest,We couldn't even fly, when we were put to the test.
A tight trap was hidden very close to the nest. We hadn't even been able to fly when we were captured.

हस्ती हमारी अपनी फ़ना पर दलील है
याँ तक मिटे कि आप हम अपनी क़सम हुए
Our existence itself is proof of our annihilation,So completely effaced, we became our own solemn oath.
Our very existence serves as proof of our own annihilation. We were erased to such an extent that we ourselves became our own solemn oath.

सख़्ती कशान-ए-इश्क़ की पूछे है क्या ख़बर
वो लोग रफ़्ता रफ़्ता सरापा अलम हुए
Why ask for tidings of love's enduring souls?
They slowly became sorrow, consuming them whole.
Why do you ask for the condition of those who bear the hardships of love? Those people gradually became sorrow personified.

तेरी वफ़ा से क्या हो तलाफ़ी कि दहर में
तेरे सिवा भी हम पे बहुत से सितम हुए
What recompense can your loyalty ever bring,When in this world, besides you, many cruelties did sting?
What compensation can your loyalty provide, because in this world, besides you, we have suffered many cruelties.

लिखते रहे जुनूँ की हिकायात-ए-ख़ूँ-चकाँ
हर-चंद इस में हाथ हमारे क़लम हुए
We kept chronicling madness's blood-dripping sagas,Though in this pursuit, our hands were severed, like pens.
We kept writing the blood-dripping tales of madness. Although, in this process, our hands were severed.

अल्लाह रे तेरी तुंदी-ए-ख़ू जिस के बीम से
अजज़ा-ए-नाला दिल में मिरे रिज़्क़-ए-हम हुए
Oh, such is the fury of your temperament, so profound its dread,That the very pieces of my lament in my heart by sorrow were fed.
Oh, the intensity of your temperament is such, from whose fear the components of my lament in my heart became sustenance for sorrow.

अहल-ए-हवस की फ़त्ह है तर्क-ए-नबर्द-ए-इश्क़
जो पाँव उठ गए वही उन के अलम हुए
For worldly souls, abandoning love's war is victory;The very steps that faltered, their triumphant banners be.
For worldly or materialistic people, abandoning the battle of love is their victory. The very steps they withdrew from the fight became their triumphant banners.

नाले अदम में चंद हमारे सुपुर्द थे
जो वाँ न खिंच सके सो वो याँ आ के दम हुए
A few laments were ours, in non-being's deep assigned,Those that couldn't rise from there, here came to die, confined.
A few laments were entrusted to us in the realm of non-existence. Those laments which could not be drawn out from there, came here and ended.

छोड़ी 'असद' न हम ने गदाई में दिल-लगी
साइल हुए तो आशिक़-ए-अहल-ए-करम हुए
Asad, we never abandoned our heart's fondness, even in beggary; When we became seekers, we became lovers of those with true generosity.
Asad, we did not abandon our heart's fondness even while begging. When we became seekers, we became lovers of generous people.
