नुक्ता-चीं है ग़म-ए-दिल उस को सुनाए न बने

मैं बुलाता तो हूँ उस को मगर ऐ जज़्बा-ए-दिल
उस पे बन जाए कुछ ऐसी कि बिन आए न बने
I do call her, yes, but O passion of my heart,may such a predicament arise that she cannot help but come.

खेल समझा है कहीं छोड़ न दे भूल न जाए
काश यूँ भी हो कि बिन मेरे सताए न बने
He deems it a game, lest he abandon, lest he forget me,Would that it were so that without tormenting me, he cannot be.
He considers this a game, fearing he might abandon or forget me. I wish it were also such that he couldn't be at ease without me bothering him.

ग़ैर फिरता है लिए यूँ तिरे ख़त को कि अगर
कोई पूछे कि ये क्या है तो छुपाए न बने
The rival carries your letter so openly, that if anyone asks what it is, he cannot possibly hide it.

इस नज़ाकत का बुरा हो वो भले हैं तो क्या
हाथ आवें तो उन्हें हाथ लगाए न बने
May this delicacy be cursed; what if they are virtuous?If they come within reach, one cannot bear to touch them.
Confound their extreme delicacy! So what if they are good-natured? If they were to come into one's grasp, it would be impossible to touch them (due to their fragility).

कह सके कौन कि ये जल्वागरी किस की है
पर्दा छोड़ा है वो उस ने कि उठाए न बने
Who can declare whose manifestation this might be?He has cast a veil so profound, it cannot be lifted.
Who can say whose grand display this truly is? He has dropped such a veil that it cannot be lifted.

मौत की राह न देखूँ कि बिन आए न रहे
तुम को चाहूँ कि न आओ तो बुलाए न बने
I do not watch for death's path, for it must certainly come; I long for you, but if you do not come, I cannot bring myself to call.
I do not await death, for it cannot fail to come. I desire you because if you do not come on your own, I cannot summon you.

बोझ वो सर से गिरा है कि उठाए न उठे
काम वो आन पड़ा है कि बनाए न बने
Such a burden has fallen from my head that it cannot be lifted,Such a task has befallen that it cannot be accomplished.
A burden has fallen from the head that cannot be lifted again. A task has come upon us that cannot be fixed or made right, no matter the effort.

इश्क़ पर ज़ोर नहीं है ये वो आतिश 'ग़ालिब'
कि लगाए न लगे और बुझाए न बने
Over love there's no sway, Ghalib, it's that very fire,Which won't ignite if you try to, nor extinguish when you desire.
There is no control over love, Ghalib. It is that fire which neither ignites when one tries to light it, nor can be extinguished when one tries to put it out.
