Ghazal
Kabir 201-210
This ghazal emphasizes the futility of life without the company of saints, love, and devotion to the divine. It distinguishes true bravery as renouncing worldly illusions for devotion, rather than physical combat. The verses also highlight that true yogic practice involves disciplining the mind, and that the soul remains bound by karma until it achieves complete spiritual knowledge.

ते दिन गये अकारथी , संगत भई न संत। प्रेम बिना पशु जीवना , भक्ति बिना भगवंत॥ 201॥
Those days passed without prayer, and I found no company of saints. Life without love is like an animal, and life without devotion is like a god (to whom one is not devoted).
These days passed without prayer, and I did not find the company of saints. Life without love is like an animal, and life without devotion is like a god (to whom one is not devoted).

He who fights with arrows and darts is not a true warrior. He who abandons illusion and practices devotion, that is what the hero says.
One who fights only with weapons (arrows and darts) is not a true warrior. The true warrior is one who abandons illusion and practices devotion, which is what the Shayar says.

तन को जोगी सब करे , मन को बिरला कोय। सहजै सब विधि पाइये , जो मन जोगी होय॥ 203॥
The body is made a yogi by everyone, but the mind is made a yogi by none. By what means does one easily attain this, who is a yogi of the mind?
The Shayar is saying that everyone can make the body act like a yogi, but few can make the mind act like one. Whoever attains the state of being a yogi of the mind easily achieves everything.

A human life is rare, it does not come again. Like leaves that fall from a tree, it does not attach again.
Human life is rare and does not come repeatedly. Just like leaves falling from a tree, life does not reattach or return repeatedly.

What good is washing and bathing, if the mind remains soiled? The fish always resides in water, and its odor never departs.
What benefit is washing and bathing if the mind remains soiled? The fish always resides in water, and its scent never leaves.

Five watches spent in vain, three watches in sleep. By a mere moment's name, how can liberation be achieved? (209)
Five watches have been spent in vain, and three watches spent in sleep. How can liberation be attained by merely chanting the name for a single moment?

पोथी पढ़-पढ़ जग मुआ , पंडित भया न कोय। ढ़ाई आखर प्रेम का , पढ़ै सो पंड़ित होय॥ 210॥
Though one peruses books till death, no scholar is found.
He who reads just two letters of love, becomes wise and profound.
The world perished while studying books, yet no scholar was found. He who reads merely two and a half letters of love becomes truly wise.
