आम हुक्म-ए-शराब करता हूँ

Mir Taqi Mir· Ghazal· 6 shers

This ghazal describes the intoxication and uncontrolled indulgence in life, symbolized by 'आम हुक्म-ए-शराब' (the general command of wine). The poet suggests that he indulges in everything—from giving 'kabab' to the accountant (muhtasib) to simply existing in a state of separation. It is an exaggerated depiction of experiencing every facet of life through separation, debate, and insatiable thirst.

बहस करता हूँ हो के अबजद-ख़्वाँ किस क़दर बे-हिसाब करता हूँ
I argue with the alphabet-lover now, How immeasurably I count it.
Even as a mere beginner learning the alphabet, I engage in debates. I argue so excessively and immeasurably that it defies all logic or proportion.

कोई बुझती है ये भड़क में अबस तिश्नगी पर इ'ताब करता हूँ
This burning passion is fading now, I am suffering from thirst (of love).
This thirst does not get quenched in this intense flare up and it is all in vain. I am merely reprimanding my longing for its persistent and futile nature.

सर तलक आब-ए-तेग़ में हूँ ग़र्क़ अब तईं आब आब करता हूँ
I am drowned in the water of the sword up to my neck; now I merely make the water of water.
I am drowned up to my head in the luster of the sword's edge. Even in this state of complete submergence, I continue to cry out for water, representing my unending thirst for the beloved.
