For the sake of Kohakan and Majnu, we did not go into the desert and mountains; in love, we, 'Mir', are extremely near to the keepers of honor.

This powerful couplet speaks of the limits of devotion. The poet, Mir Taqi Mir, tells us that while we are willing to face any hardship—the deserts and mountains—for the sake of legendary lovers like Kohkan and Majnoon, there is one boundary we will never cross. That boundary is our self-respect. For Mir, honor is more valuable than any tale of forbidden love.
