We have seen the cruelties and witnessed the betrayals;
Was it better that we saw all your flaws?
We have witnessed the cruelties and seen the betrayals; was it better that we saw all your flaws?

From your lane, O garland of the world, I saw thousands of four-legged creatures.
From your lane, O garland of the world, I saw thousands of four-legged creatures.

The one who is a fiery bird, whose gaze is a scorching ash,
We saw mere winds blowing upon our faces.
The fiery bird whose gaze is like scorching ash vanished from sight, yet we only saw mere winds blowing across our faces.

In the pursuit of separation, my heart wanders astray,
I have witnessed the parting of all beloved friends.
In the pursuit of your union, I wander aimlessly,
Dear friend, I have witnessed the separation of everyone.

Only the mirror-like reflection found you,
Only these self-manifestations did we observe.
Only the mirror-like reflection found you, and all that we observed were merely self-manifestations.

Where there was the kohl-like luster of jewels, was the dust of the feet,
In those very eyes, I saw the spinning bangles again.
Where there was the luster of jewel-like kohl, there was only the dust of the feet; in those very eyes, I saw the spinning bangles again.

Never, my lord, will I forsake that struggle,
Since the day our eyes have exchanged battles.
I will never abandon that struggle, since the day our eyes witnessed battles.
