Ghazal
Akha Bhagat 1
This ghazal humorously critiques superficial religious devotion and rituals. It describes people engaging in practices without true understanding, like a blind father-in-law and deaf daughter-in-law going to a sermon. The verses lament that despite years spent in external acts like applying tilak and visiting pilgrimages, genuine spiritual refuge or union with God remains elusive due to a lack of inner sincerity.

A blind father-in-law, a deaf daughter-in-law too, Yet all have gone, the holy tale to pursue.
A blind father-in-law and a deaf daughter-in-law both went to listen to a religious story.

One thing was said, another heard, a great mistake,Similarly, kohl for the eyes smeared upon the cheek.
Something was said and something entirely different was heard, akin to smearing the kohl meant for the eyes onto the cheek instead.

Fifty-three years passed applying the sacred mark,And the rosary's beads, their holes wore away,
Fifty-three years passed while applying the sacred mark, and the holes of the rosary beads wore away.

My feet grew weary from countless pilgrimages,Yet still, I found no refuge at Hari's gates.
My feet grew weary from repeated pilgrimages, yet I still did not reach Hari's refuge.

My ears have burst from listening to lore,Yet, Akha, no Brahman-knowledge came to my core.
My ears have burst from listening to tales and lore, yet Akha says, true knowledge of Brahman did not come to me.

A certain fool has such a habit,Each stone he sees, he makes a god of it.
A fool has a habit of worshipping every stone he sees as a deity.
