આવી નગરમાં લાગી લાય
પંખીને શો ધોખો થાય;
— Akha Bhagat
Meaning
A fire has broken out in the city; what sorrow or concern does this cause to a bird?
Explanation
This couplet speaks about detachment. Imagine a big city catches fire. But what trouble does this cause to a bird? A bird, soaring high and free, doesn't own any part of the city. It builds no houses, hoards no wealth there. So, when the city burns, the bird simply flies away, unharmed and unconcerned. This teaches us that if we don't hold onto worldly things too tightly, if we don't get too attached to possessions or outcomes, then life's troubles, like a fire, cannot truly disturb our inner peace or freedom. We can rise above them, just like the bird.
