Often, mercy itself has turned into an enemy, and many times, righteousness (dharma) has become a foe.

This couplet tells us that sometimes, even good qualities like compassion or righteousness can unexpectedly become our adversaries. Imagine being overly compassionate, shielding someone from necessary consequences; that kindness might hinder their growth or perpetuate a harmful situation. Similarly, a rigid adherence to what one believes is 'right' or 'धर्म' (dharma) can sometimes lead to unfairness or even conflict, if it overlooks nuance or empathy. The verse reminds us that life's situations are complex, and what seems virtuous on the surface might, in certain contexts, lead to unintended negative outcomes, making us rethink our actions and beliefs.
