The secrets of love, the veiling of passion, were those very sighs that I had thought I restrained.

This profound couplet by Allama Iqbal speaks of the deceptive nature of love and desire. The poet suggests that the secrets of love (raaz-e-mohabbat) and the modesty of passion (parda-dari-e-shauq) were merely the desires (fughaan) themselves. The deepest irony is that the poet thought he had controlled or restrained these desires (zabt-e-fughaan), but they were, in fact, the very things that were revealed!
