राई ज़ोर-ए-ख़ुदी से पर्बत
पर्बत ज़ोफ़-ए-ख़ुदी से राई
— Allama Iqbal
Meaning
The mustard seed, through the strength of its own existence, elevates the mountain, and the mountain, through the grace of its own existence, elevates the mustard seed.
Explanation
This profound couplet explores the concept of 'Zor-e-Khudi'—the indomitable power of the self. Allama Iqbal suggests that existence itself is cyclical and interconnected. Just as the mountain (Purbat) is composed of 'Rai' (a seed/grain), and conversely, the 'Rai' is formed from the 'Zulf' (tresses) of the mountain, he shows that the essence of self permeates every element of life. Everything is connected by the thread of self-realization!
