तू मिरी रात को महताब से महरूम न रख
तिरे पैमाने में है माह-ए-तमाम ऐ साक़ी
— Allama Iqbal
Meaning
Do not deprive my night of the moon, O beloved; for in your cup resides the full moon, O cupbearer.
Explanation
This profound couplet is a masterful plea from the lover to the 'Saqi'—the cupbearer of ecstasy. The lover begs not to be deprived of the moonlight (Mahab) on his night. Why? Because the cupbearer holds the fullness of the entire month (Maah-e-Tamaam) in his pitcher! It’s a beautiful metaphor for the overwhelming abundance of joy, beauty, and spiritual intoxication that the beloved (or divine source) possesses, but must share with the yearning soul. It captures the desperate hope for continuous bliss.
