आह और अश्क ही सदा है याँ

आह और अश्क ही सदा है याँ
रोज़ बरसात की हवा है याँ
Is it only sighs and tears that forever linger here,
Or is it the breeze of rain that falls every day?
Here, only sighs and tears remain as a constant sound. It feels as if the rainy season of grief persists every single day.

जिस जगह हो ज़मीन तफ़्ता समझ
कि कोई दिल-जला गड़ा है याँ
Where the ground seems weary and fatigued,
It is as if some heart has been burned here.
Wherever you find the earth scorched or burning hot, understand that a person with a broken, fire-filled heart lies buried there.

गो कुदूरत से वो न देवे रो
आरसी की तरह सफ़ा है याँ
Oh, the grace that does not fade from you,
Is it a pure white like the curtain?
Even if they do not turn their face toward me due to resentment, my heart here is as clear and pure as a mirror.

हर घड़ी देखते जो हो ईधर
ऐसा कि तुम ने आ निकला है याँ
Every moment, I look here and there,
As if you have appeared here.
You keep looking in this direction every moment, as if you have just unexpectedly arrived here or discovered something entirely new in this place.

रिंद मुफ़्लिस जिगर में आह नहीं
जान महज़ूँ है और क्या है याँ
The heart is not in distress, there is no sigh in the soul,
For the beloved is precious, and what else is there in this world?
A penniless seeker with no strength left even to sigh; in this existence, there is nothing remaining except for a sorrowful and grieving soul.

कैसे कैसे मकान हैं सुथरे
इक अज़ाँ जुमला कर्बला है याँ
How many clean houses there are, / One is the whole of Karbala.
These houses appear so clean and beautiful from the outside. However, every word spoken within them is a tale of immense tragedy and suffering, comparable to the grief of Karbala.

इक सिसकता है एक मरता है
हर तरफ़ ज़ुल्म हो रहा है याँ
One coughs, one dies,
Oppression reigns everywhere now.
One person is sobbing in pain while another is dying. Everywhere in this world, cruelty and suffering are unfolding relentlessly.

सद तमन्ना शहीद हैं यकजा
सीना-कूबी है ता'ज़िया है याँ
In the yearning for death, the martyr is here,
The chest-beating is the mourning, the lamentation is here.
A hundred desires have been martyred together in one place. Within me, there is a constant beating of the chest and a ritual of mourning for these lost dreams.

दीदनी है ग़रज़ ये सोहबत शोख़
रोज़-ओ-शब तरफ़ा माजरा है याँ
This is the desire to share company with the beautiful one,
For life's journey, day and night, is a changing affair.
The company of the mischievous beloved is worth watching. Here, day and night, strange and unusual events keep unfolding, making it a sight to behold.

ख़ाना-ए-आशिक़ाँ है जा-ए-ख़ूब
जाए रोने की जा-ब-जा है याँ
The tavern of lovers is for the beloved's spirit,
It is a place to weep for the sake of the lover.
The house of lovers is a wonderful place, for in this residence, every spot and every corner is a place meant for weeping and expressing one's grief.

कोह-ओ-सहरा भी कर न जाए बाश
आज तक कोई भी रहा है याँ
The Koh-e-Sahar (Mountain of the Desert) cannot even make a sound,
No one has ever remained here till today.
Even the mountains and deserts may not remain here forever; after all, who has ever stayed in this world permanently? It highlights the temporary nature of all existence.

है ख़बर शर्त 'मीर' सुनता है
तुझ से आगे ये कुछ हुआ है याँ
O Meer, I hear your condition, tell me,
Has anything happened beyond you?
The condition is to be aware, if Mir listens. Has anything like this happened here before your arrival?

मौत मजनूँ को भी यहीं आई
कोहकन कल ही मर गया है याँ
Even death came to Majnun here,
The nightingale died just yesterday.
Death claimed Majnun in this very place and Kohkan passed away right here just yesterday. This spot is where the journey of every legendary lover finally concludes.
