दिल जिगर जल कर हुए हैं दोनों एक
दरमियाँ आया है जब से पा-ए-दाग़
— Mir Taqi Mir
Meaning
My heart and liver are burned and merged into one, ever since your marked feet have passed by me.
Explanation
This couplet speaks to the ultimate surrender of the self to the beloved's memory. The heart (dil) and the very core of being (jigar) have become one, losing their individual boundaries. This merging, this dissolution of the self, happens simply because the lover has witnessed the beloved's 'daagh'—the beautiful, lingering mark of their footsteps. It shows that the beloved's mere presence is enough to consume the lover's entire existence.
