सिर्फ़ लिल्लाह ख़म के ख़म करते
न क्या चर्ख़ ने कलाल हमें
— Mir Taqi Mir
Meaning
Neither did the mere whisper of Lillah, nor the whirling of the artistic sword, diminish us.
Explanation
This profound couplet by Mir Taqi Mir challenges the concept of divine decree (Qadr). The poet suggests that all suffering and flaws (ख़म) in life are attributed to God's will. However, he raises a critical question: If everything happens by divine will, then why has the relentless wheel of time (चर्ख़) taken away our inherent grace, beauty, or perfection (कलाल)? It is a deeply melancholic reflection on the gap between spiritual belief and harsh worldly reality.
