Whether something good will happen because of you, or something bad,
God knows what will happen with my own fate in your sorrow.
Whether something good or bad will happen because of you, God knows what will happen to my own fate.

Tafahhus faayda, naaseh tadaaruk, kya hoga tujh se?
Wahi paavega mera dard-e-dil, jis ka laga hoga.
What benefit, what advice, what recovery can come from you? Only one who has experienced it will understand my heart's pain.

What desire can a beloved possess, other than that for you?
If the pen were in hand, countless letters would be written.
What desire can a beloved possess, other than for you? If the pen were in hand, countless letters would be written.

The shops of beauty must have been before you, your stand was sold; if you were in the marketplace, when would Joseph have been sold?
The shops of beauty must have been before you, and your stand was sold; if you were in the marketplace, when would Joseph have been sold?

If we, poor folks, should receive any insult from the brethren of this age,
Say that it will be good, my brother, it will be good.
If we, like poor mendicants, receive any insult from the brethren of this age, just say that it will be good, my brother, it will be good.

The memory of that faithless one is not so delightful,
We also thought that they would be friendly to us.
The memory of that faithless person is not so pleasant, but we also thought that they would be close to us.

The creation that can interpret the Day of Judgment,
Perhaps in that alleyway, a ditch must have formed.
The poet who can interpret the Day of Judgment, perhaps in that alleyway, a ditch must have formed.

Strange is the love of Farhad and Majnun, a disease of passion, for without it, life would have been incomplete.
Strange is the love of Farhad and Majnun; it is a disease of passion, for without it, life would be incomplete.

Oh, the path of the flower garden, which God knows, why is it not a source of honor?
On this dust, the blood of how many dear ones must have fallen.
Oh, the path of the flower garden, which God knows, why is it not a source of honor? On this dust, the blood of how many dear ones must have fallen.

I have been a caged bird in this garden, much like you; perhaps you too have heard my cry from the streams.
I have been like a caged bird in this garden, just like you; perhaps you too have heard my noise from the streams.

Neither the throne awoke on the path to take the breath from him,
When my soul's caged bird was still within its cage.
Neither the throne awoke on the path to take his breath, when my soul's bird was still within its cage.

Somewhere, 'Mir' was killed in the streets of that city,
Or perhaps, in a fit of madness, he simply rose up.
