Ghazal
This ghazal expresses the lament of a heart fraught with troubles, suggesting that this heart was never subject to any pain or hardship. The poet suggests that without Adam reviving the world, this world (mirror) would not have been worthy of viewing. It also touches upon the themes of the desolation of homelands and the freedom from any captivity or confinement.

Was my heart not a wandering, fickle one, inclined to love?
Or was it not a corner where pain and oppression gathered?
Was my heart not a wandering, fickle one, inclined to love? Or was it not a corner where pain and oppression gathered?

From the dust of Adam, the world was brought to life; otherwise, this mirror would not have been worthy of sight.
Since the world was brought to life from the dust of Adam, this mirror was worthy of being seen.

In the sunlight, the corpses of impoverished lands burn,
Yet in your alleyway, even the shadow of a wall was absent.
The lines suggest that just as the lands are burning from poverty, there was no shelter or support even in your path.

The garden was so lovely, until his hair was youthful,
When the bird of the soul was not captive in the cage of the body.
The garden was so lovely, until his hair was youthful, when the bird of the soul was not captured in the cage of the body.

He was not a killer, nor was he a foolish fool, for verily,
He was not a criminal deserving of such an unjust death.
The Shayar says that he was neither a killer nor a foolish fool, because he was not a criminal deserving of such an unjust death.

Unless the passion of love had taken hold, or it was not the buyer of Zeuchessa, the Joseph of Egypt.
If it were not for the passion of love, he would not have been the buyer of Zeuchessa, the Joseph of Egypt.

From the softest wax, no one gives us fate,
The breast's company, this heart did not require.
No one gives us fate even from the softest wax; this heart did not require the company of a breast.

Tonight, I am bewildered, remaining silent, 'Meer',
Though there were many pains, my lips were not ready to speak.
Tonight, I am bewildered and silent, 'Meer'. Although there were many pains, my lips were not ready to express them.
