किसू चश्मे पे दरिया के दिया ऊपर नज़र रखिए
हमारे दीदा-ए-नम-दीदा क्या कुछ कम हैं ये दोनों
— Mir Taqi Mir
Meaning
Keep your eyes on the water above the curtain of the sea, / Our two eyes, the eyes of the heart and the eyes of the sight, are not lacking anything.
Explanation
This profound couplet is a declaration of internal depth over external spectacle. Mir Taqi Mir suggests that while the beautiful lamps floating on the river are mesmerizing, they are merely a distraction. The true source of beauty, emotion, and depth lies within the lovers' eyes—the 'diida-e-nam-diida' (eyes that have wept and eyes that are dry). The poet reminds us that the emotional depth held in a pair of eyes is far more powerful than any sight we can behold.
