The secret cannot stay hidden because everyone's gaze turns toward the hem of her dress and toward my torn collar.
This couplet captures the impossible struggle of keeping a passionate love hidden from the watchful eyes of the world. The poet observes that words are unnecessary when physical signs betray the truth—people naturally look from the beloved's pristine hem to the lover's torn collar, a classic symbol of heartache and madness. In that silent exchange of glances, the entire story of obsession, suffering, and unspoken intimacy is instantly laid bare.
