Ghazal
This ghazal portrays the poignant irony of yearning for union with a beloved with whom there is neither prior acquaintance nor meeting. Ultimately, it reflects a sense of bittersweet relief, where the complete severing of hope brings enduring peace to the tormented heart.

For union with that one, this afflicted heart does pine; with whom there is neither a meeting, nor any acquaintance of mine.
This afflicted heart yearns for union with someone with whom there is neither any meeting nor any prior acquaintance.

A hundred thanks, the death of hope has made the heart at peace and whole; / After long ages, God has shown this welcome countenance to my soul.
A hundred thanks that the end of hope has finally brought peace and singular focus to the heart; after a very long time, God has shown this state.

The power of God's own hand resides in patient endurance; whenever the trial of hard times struck, only this came to my aid.
Patience holds the power of God's own hand; whenever a difficult time befell, it is this very endurance that came to the rescue.

No fear have we of the stranger; whatever dread there is, is of our own; whenever we have suffered defeat, the blow was dealt by our very own.
We do not fear strangers; whatever fear there is, is only of our own people. Whenever we have suffered defeat or harm, it has always been at the hands of our own.

Be not undone by drunken stupor, nor senseless in the frenzy of wine; such is the counsel handed down by the Master of the Tavern.
The elder of the tavern has given this advice: do not be utterly lost in intoxication, nor be rendered senseless in a drunken frenzy.

No desire is visible within my heart anymore; after ages, a longing of mine has finally been fulfilled.
Now no desire can be seen in my heart anymore, as after a very long time, a longing of mine has finally been fulfilled.

I spoke the honest truth, and at once all fingers rose in blame; Truly, O Hali, in speaking truth lies such an utter shame!
As soon as I spoke the truth, everyone pointed fingers at me. Truly, O Hali, speaking the truth only brings immense disgrace.
