Ghazal

The poet expresses a mixture of wonder, humility, and playful embarrassment at the beloved's overwhelming grace and intimate gestures, often feeling undeserving of such profound favors.

I was mere dust, yet you made me your servant—what mercy!I sought your servitude, and you bestowed love—what mercy!
I was mere dust, yet you made me your servant—what mercy! I sought your servitude, and you bestowed love—what mercy!

He has always come here, claiming the bond of friendship, Awaken him from sleep with a kiss on his cheek, O mercy.
He has always come here, asserting the claim of friendship. O mercy, awaken him from his sleep with a kiss on his cheek.

Such foot-kissing, why do you daily bring me shame?Jest is dear, but where am I, and where this grace?
Why do you daily make me ashamed with such foot-kissing? Though jesting is dear, where am I and where is such grace?

I made the henna for your sake, yet you apply it to me; Why, O mercy, do you compel me to wash this tradition away?
I made the henna for your sake, yet you apply it to me. Why, O mercy, do you compel me to wash this tradition away?

આ આપને જોઈ લજાતાં બાગના મારાં ગુલો;
My garden's roses, seeing you, blush and hide in shame; Those that prick, when placed at your feet, you deem a grace upon your head's claim.
My garden's roses, upon seeing you, blush in shyness. Even those thorny roses, when placed at your feet, you consider them an honor bestowed upon your head.

I go to kiss your feet, and you come to embrace,Then I feign anger, but it's your smiling grace.
When I go to kiss your feet, you come to embrace me. I feign anger, but ultimately, it is your smiling grace that shines through.

ના પેર ચૂમ્યા આપના, ના પેરમાં લોટ્યો જરા;
Neither kissed your feet, nor in them did I roll,
Just let my desires be fulfilled, make me whole;
Even that, I'll count as mercy, a kindness of your soul.
I haven't kissed your feet nor rolled in them. Just let my desires be fulfilled, and I will consider even that a great act of mercy.

ના માનતા તો ના કહું, જે જે બનાવો તે બનું;
If you don't believe, I won't speak, whatever you make me, that I shall be;Even then, won't compassion grant me four kisses upon your feet?
If you don't believe, I won't speak; whatever you make me, that I will become. Even so, won't compassion grant me four kisses upon your feet?

હું જેમ આ ઘટતો ગયો, આપે બઢાવ્યો તેમ તેમ;
The more I lessened, the more you made me grow;Wherever I fall, this mercy's there to hold.
The more I lessened myself, the more you elevated me; wherever I fall, this mercy stands ready to catch me.

મારો સિતારો જોઈ આ તીખા બન્યા છે દુશ્મનો;
Seeing my star, these foes have grown so keen;Yet I remain carefree, knowing your grace has been.
Upon seeing my good fortune, these enemies have grown sharp. I remain unconcerned, knowing this to be Your acknowledged grace.

Your bond cannot be hidden, nor can secret love remain;The whole world has known it, let not your mercy wane.
Your bond cannot be hidden, nor can secret love remain. The entire world has known this, so do not let your mercy diminish.

Your very slave, having offered, has placed himself before you,I ask for just this mercy, that your kindness may see me through.
Your very slave has offered himself and placed himself before you. I ask for just this much mercy, that your kindness may endure.

Wherever you bid me ascend, there I climb, hand in hand with thee,May mercy flow unceasingly, lest this hand ever part from me.
I ascend wherever you lead me, holding your hand. May there be continuous mercy so that this hand never separates.

નીરની સાથે ચડે છે નીરનાં ખીલી ફૂલો;
With the water, its blooming flowers ascend;With water, mercy does not descend, it truly graces the water.
Just as water's blooming flowers rise with it, mercy does not descend with the water; rather, it truly graces the water.

લાખ ગુનાઓમાં છતાં છું આપનો ને આપથી;
Though lost in a million sins, I am yours, and from your hand I rise;My tongue feels shame, yet I pray—may this grace prosper 'neath your skies.
Even though I am lost in a million sins, I am still yours and from you. My tongue feels shame, yet I pray that this mercy (or grace) may always prosper.
