Ghazal
This ghazal speaks about the time when we had access to a means or connection through passion (junoon). The poet suggests that as long as we had this passion, we were free from the worries of our own chains. It explores how feelings of devotion and trust can lead to both the most beautiful and the most painful experiences of life.

When through frenzy we sought the means,
It was the thread of our own shackles that gleamed.
When we sought means through passion/frenzy, it was the very thread of our own shackles that shone.

The bed was in the garden, where the nightingales were,
The stream was the marketplace of reliance.
The bed was in the garden, where the nightingales were, and the stream was the marketplace of reliance.

As if I had not kept faith with my own eyes,
I was the season of flowers, the ambassador of the nightingale.
As if I had not kept faith with my own eyes, I was the season of flowers, the ambassador of the nightingale.

They killed us after recognizing us; / Never should we have left this dwelling.
They killed us after recognizing us; never should we have left this dwelling.

Of the one who caught my eye in the city,
Was it the garment of coyness, or was it mere neglect?
Of the one who caught my eye in the city, was it the garment of coyness, or was it mere neglect?

Now the heart has neither resolve nor peace, / When the memory of days was bearable.
The lines mean that the heart currently lacks both courage and peace, contrasting this state with a time when the memories of the past were manageable or bearable.

In the snare of your tresses, finally, / My heart was utterly heedless.
Literally, the couplet means that finally, I was ensnared in the snare of your tresses, and my heart became utterly heedless.

As if the stature's flaws vanished, just like a playful stream over a bridge.
As if the flaws of the stature disappeared, just like a playful stream flowing over a bridge.

The effort I exerted, O Mir, was to be with the fragrance of the rose.
The effort I exerted, O Mir, was only to be with the fragrance of the rose.
